Unable to get data off an 8 gb USB drive, it is asking for drive to b formatted everytime you try to access it?

Is the only way to do this to format the drive and then recover the files with data retrieval software?

You got it the wrong way round. Try the recovery software first then try reformatting it. My experience is that USB drives don’t last forever and the cheapest ones are less reliable. If they start going wrong – throw it away.
