Is there any software (preferably freeware) that can retrieve data from a hard disk

I have a new hard disk and tried to put the first a slave, but acknowledges know. I will try to recover some files before you completely destroy it. I see a lot of software, but this is not the retrieval problem.

I like to use Knoppix, a Linux operating system that can fit on a bootable CD. I just boot from the CD and then mount the drive when you see Linux and copy files to a flash or external hard drive (even when connected to these when you start may freeze for some reason). I am unsure if this would work well as slavery did not work. Worth a try though!
