how can i recover files after a system crash?

My hard drive crashed but I was able to restore it using the repair tool on the Windows XP cd. However all my files have now gone. Part of the hard drive partition is no longer available for some reason.

You can’t restore it now! All data is gone when you reinstall a OS.
