how can i check my hard disk drive when my laptop wont boot up?

It starts to boot, then i get an error message saying registry file failure, cannot read hive file, and it cannot read file, may be corrupt or missing.
wont boot in safe mode or anything.
i tried using the xp disk to repair but it said, couldn’t find hard disk.
However i did use a hitachi program And boot it from disk to check it and that said it was ok.
any ideas???
the laptop is a compaq presario c300 running windows xp media center.
I cant find the IDE option in my setup.
there is a primary hard drive test, but that fails.

but any how
restart your pc , press “del” Or “F2″ key to enter your setup , del is common key to enter setup , after you enter in your setup, check for an option “IDE devices connected to computer” if you get your hard drive in the list provided by IDE list, then your hard drive is safe , if there is no hard drive is not shown in the list then…… repair your hard drive or then go for some hardware services!
