file recovery after format?

hi i been trying to find few data and lost my pictuers, i have external harddrive, i accedently formatted and i lost all my dadat and pictuer in it, i been trying to find a programe to recover it but not chance yet, can you give me some advice i downloaded almost 5 different programe got it from torrent but not been able to recover any idea
